To transfer a CNC program from a Windows PC to an older CNC machine over RS-232, you need a suitable serial connection, matching communication settings, and CNC program transfer software. C2C DNC provides an NC editor and configurable send/receive profiles, with a free 10-transfer trial so you can check your own setup.
What you need
- A CNC controller that supports RS-232 text program transfer.
- A Windows computer with .NET 10 Desktop Runtime.
- A native serial port or a USB-to-RS-232 adapter with the correct driver.
- A cable wired for your controller. Matching connector shapes alone do not confirm the pinout.
- A suitable NC program and the controller manual for its communication settings and receive procedure.
How to send a CNC program from a PC
- Connect the computer and controller. Follow the machine and adapter instructions, then identify the adapter's COM port in Windows.
- Choose a machine profile in C2C DNC. Select your COM port and verify baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, and flow control against the controller. Built-in profiles are starting points, not automatic configuration of the CNC.
- Open your NC program. Check the program number, format, and any controller-specific requirements. Preview the transfer to review what will be sent.
- Prepare the CNC to receive. Use the receive/input procedure in your controller manual. Button sequences and modes vary by machine.
- Send the program. Start the transfer in C2C DNC and watch progress on both screens. This guide covers transferring a program; it does not establish compatibility with running a machine in drip-feed mode.
- Verify the received program. Compare the program number, beginning and end, and check for missing or changed characters. Follow your normal machine verification procedure before machining.
Yasnac, Haas, FANUC and other controller profiles
C2C DNC includes 18 profiles, including Yasnac MX-3 and i80, EMCO ET342 / Siemens 810T, Haas Classic Control, FANUC families, and other serial controllers. Match the profile to the actual machine settings and cable. Mazak profiles use EIA/ISO text rather than Mazatrol conversational files; the HEIDENHAIN profile uses EXT ASCII rather than FE or LSV2.
If the transfer does not work
- No data arrives: check the selected COM port, driver, cable wiring, and that the CNC is waiting to receive.
- Garbled characters: recheck baud rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits on both ends.
- The transfer stalls or loses data: verify flow control and cable handshake wiring; review line delay and receive-completion options.
- The CNC rejects the program: check its required program format, delimiters, program number, and available memory.
Try CNC program transfer software before buying
Download the free C2C DNC trial for Windows. It allows 10 successfully completed sends or receives with no time limit. Failed and cancelled operations do not use the allowance.
If it works for your setup, the personalized unlimited license costs CAD $25. Your copy is prepared manually using your billing company name, or your full billing name when no company is provided, and delivered to your order email address.
